Cometas en el cielo (The Kite Runner)

¿Ya leyeron este libro? Háganlo. Es fabuloso. Está muy bien escrito y el autor se las arregla para mantener el interés de principio a fin. Los personajes están bien caracterizados y la historia explora aspectos de la historia reciente de Afganistán y el tema de los talibanes. Personalmente, me identifiqué con los personajes infantiles, por aquello de la cometa o papalote o volantín que, debo confesarlo, fue junto con la pelota de fútbol y los carro-patines, uno de los juguetes de esos que fabricaba yo mismo y me quitaba el sueño, siguiendo todo una ceremonia de búsqueda de buena caña o virulí, papel cometa, pabilo, goma y retazos de ropa vieja o nueva cuando la vieja no estaba disponible con la consiguiente tanda de correazos que me caía luego de que mi madre descubría que a alguna de sus prendas, le hacia falta una manga o una pierna.... :-)

Leí el libro en inglés y me gustó muchísimo. He hojeado algunas páginas de la versión en español y no está mal la traducción, aun cuando el título pasado al español si pierde su esencia. La traducción literal de "The Kite Runner" no es ni por casualidad "Cometas en el cielo". La traducción literal sería algo así como "El corredor de cometas" pero podría ser también el "El cazador de cometas". El título original es un concepto dinámico y tiene relación con la esencia de la historia que se centra en dos niños y su relación mutua alrededor de una hermosa tradición afgana que es el combate de cometas y la cacería de las cometas derrotadas como símbolo de triunfo. La idea del combate y cacería de las cometas es algo que recorre el libro de principio a fin. Define la naturaleza de la historia y es el pretexto perfecto para que el autor de un final maravilloso a la obra. La traducción al español "Cometas en el cielo" no tiene relación con nada de esto. Es un concepto estático, más una pintura que una historia. Pero no se dejen desalentar por esto, pues el libro vale la pena, es hermoso. Y además ya salió la película... que espero sea tan buena como el libro.

Have you already read this book? If don’t, then do it. It's fabulous. It is very well written and the author manages to sustain the interest till the end. The characters are well defined and the story explores aspects of the recent history of Afghanistan and the Taliban issue.I read the book in English, and I liked it a lot. I just checked some pages in the Spanish version, and it is not a bad translation, even if the title passed to the Spanish loses its essence. The literal translation for "The Kite Runner" is not by chance “Cometas en el cielo” ("Kites in the sky”).

The original title is a dynamic concept and relates to the essence of the story, which focuses on two boys and their relationship around a beautiful Afghan tradition: the fighting kites and the hunting of the defeated kite as a symbol of triumph. The idea of fighting and hunting kites is something that runs through the whole book. It defines the nature of the story and gives to the author a perfect pretext to give a wonderful end to the book. The translation into Spanish "Kites in the sky" has no connection with any of this. It is a static concept, a painting more than a story. However, do not get discouraged by this because the book is worthy, it is beautiful. And since the movie came out ... I hope it will be as good as the book.
